Hurricane Season Is Here: Welcome to Florida! How to Prepare Your Home Before the Storm

If you’re new to Florida, welcome to paradise! We have beautiful beaches, year-round sunshine, amazing boating and fishing… and yes, hurricane season.

Every year from June 1st through November 30th, Florida homeowners keep one eye on the weather and the other on their preparedness plans. The good news is that a little preparation before a storm can save you a lot of stress, money, and headaches later.

At Bee Electrical Contracting Inc., we want our neighbors throughout Port St. Lucie, Stuart, Palm City, Jensen Beach, Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Vero Beach, and surrounding areas to stay safe this hurricane season.

Before the Storm: Prepare Now, Not Later

The biggest mistake homeowners make is waiting until a hurricane watch is issued. By then, stores are crowded, generators are sold out, and contractors are booked solid.

Here are a few things you can do now:

Test Your Smoke Detectors

Power outages can create unexpected safety hazards. Make sure all smoke detectors are working properly and replace batteries if needed.

Check Your Electrical Panel

Older electrical panels, loose breakers, corrosion, and outdated equipment can become serious issues during storms and power restoration. If your panel is older or you’ve experienced electrical issues, have it inspected before hurricane season gets busy.

Consider Whole-Home Surge Protection

When utility power is interrupted and restored, power surges can damage electronics, appliances, air conditioning systems, televisions, and computers.

A whole-home surge protector helps protect your investment and is one of the best upgrades Florida homeowners can make.

Have a Generator Plan

If losing power for several days would be a major inconvenience, now is the time to think about backup power.

Options include:

  • Portable generators with a properly installed generator interlock.
  • Standby whole-home generators.
  • Dedicated circuits for refrigerators, freezers, medical equipment, and essential devices.

Never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring without proper equipment. Backfeeding can seriously injure utility workers and create dangerous conditions.

Trim Trees and Secure Outdoor Equipment

While not electrical work, this is just as important. Flying debris and fallen branches are among the most common causes of power outages and electrical damage during storms.

During the Storm

If a hurricane is approaching:

  • Charge phones and battery packs.
  • Unplug sensitive electronics.
  • Turn off non-essential equipment.
  • Follow local evacuation orders if issued.
  • Stay away from downed power lines.

Remember: If a power line is on the ground, assume it is energized and dangerous.

After the Storm

When the storm passes, take your time.

Many electrical hazards appear after the wind and rain stop.

Watch for:

  • Damaged service equipment.
  • Water inside electrical panels.
  • Broken meter cans.
  • Damaged outdoor outlets.
  • Fallen power lines.
  • Pool equipment that was submerged.

If your home experienced flooding, do not simply turn breakers back on. Electrical systems exposed to water should be inspected before being energized.
